Moving into Supported Living: Free Pictures for Autistic and Non-Speaking Adults
Updated: 3 days ago
Moving from the family home into supported living is one of the biggest changes in life. For a profoundly autistic, non-speaking adult it means a new home, new people and a new daily rhythm all at once. Seeing things in pictures beforehand makes the change easier to prepare for.
This post brings together free pictures for the move and for everyday life in supported living. The pictures show an adult man or woman, in an adult's home.
The move in pictures
The Lainattu Rauha® picture bank has pictures for each stage of the move. Here they are in the order the move and the first weeks often go:
I move into supported living
My own room in supported living
The shared living room
The support worker arrives for their shift
We have coffee together
The support worker knocks before coming in
My family comes to visit
I visit my parents
I go back to my supported living home

A day in supported living
In a new home the daily rhythm changes. Pictures can show what happens during the day and in what order. The same pictures can be used as a visual schedule every day.

When the support worker changes
In supported living, support workers change with each shift, and a night worker is there at night. Changing faces can feel unsafe when you do not know who comes next. Pictures can show when the shift changes and who will be there in the evening and at night.

Free time
Everyday life also has things to enjoy. The picture bank has pictures for a café, the cinema and the gym, so an outing can be shown in advance.

Pictures for men and women
Nearly every picture of an adult comes in a male and a female version. The picture bank already has over 700 pictures of adults, and more are added as needed. Choose Adult pictures in the picture bank to see only the pictures of adults.
How to use the pictures
Start looking at the pictures in good time before the move. Take them along to visits as well.
Send the pictures with the person to the new home so that the staff use the same pictures. Familiar pictures travel from one home to the next.
Tell the staff that the person does not speak and uses pictures. It helps to show a picture before every new situation.
You can type your own text on a picture before printing, for example the support worker's name or the name of the home.
Moving is a big change, and getting used to a new home can take a long time. The same pictures every day bring predictability.
